Private Rum & Whisky Casks

A long-cherished dream could soon come true: your very own rum or whisky barrel. Whether you're a private enthusiast, a rum or whisky club, or a restaurant or bar owner, owning (or gifting) your own barrel is something truly special for you, your friends and colleagues, or even your restaurant guests. We make it possible for you to soon call yourself the proud owner of a rum or whisky barrel! Here's how it works:

1.) Choosing your whisky:
The first challenge is choosing the most important component of your future whisky: the distillate. You can select from our many Bærenman whisky distillates (various single malts, rye, corn, spelt, peated, smoked, and more) or create your own unique recipe. Our master distiller will be happy to assist and advise you. For rum enthusiasts, we also offer Bærenman rum distillate made from organic sugar cane molasses from Paraguay.

2.) Choosing your barrel:
Perhaps the second most important, flavor-defining component of your future whisky is the oak cask. First, you need to decide on the capacity, and then whether you prefer a previously used cask (whisky, port, sherry, sweet wine, etc.) or a virgin oak cask, meaning a brand new one (French oak, American oak, cherry, mulberry, etc.). These same casks are, of course, also available to our rum connoisseurs. Our master distiller will be happy to assist you in selecting the right oak cask.

3.) Filling your barrel:
Your barrel will now be filled with the appropriate amount of your chosen distillate, freshly produced in our copper still at an ideal alcohol strength of 60%. You can now take your barrel home. It's best to store your wooden barrel in a place with a constant temperature of 18°C and a humidity of around 80%. This helps to minimize the "angel's share," or evaporation of the distillate.

4.) Maturation:
Now comes the exciting part! According to European spirits regulations, it takes three years and one day before your whisky can truly be called whisky. During this time, many color and flavor compounds from the wood are transferred into the distillate, giving your whisky/rum not only its color but also its characteristic taste. No one will mind if you occasionally enjoy a small sip and thus accompany your distillate during its maturation. By the way: there are no regulations regarding how long rum must be aged!

5.) Completion:
If, after three long years of aging, any of your whisky remains and you wish to have it emptied, you can return your cask to us. The empty cask, of course, remains yours. Refilling it is a good idea to prevent the cask from drying out and deteriorating. Depending on your preference, you can then choose a specific drinking strength or leave the rum/whiskey at cask strength. Our master distiller will be happy to assist you with this. If you wish, we can also bottle your finished product for you and label it either with our handwritten labels or your own. The price of your private rum or whisky cask depends on several factors: the type of spirit, the cask's capacity, the type of wood used, alcohol tax (depending on the capacity), and VAT. The bottling and finishing are billed separately.
